OW- Oily Waste Flashcards
What is the purpose of the OW system?
Collects and transports liquid waste from equipment and floor drains of the turbine building, the control building, the diesel generator buildings, the fire pump house, and the yard area
Collection point for an oil/water mixture at the oily waste separator, where the oil is manually skimmed and removed for proper disposal
How many sump pumps are utilized in the sumps of the OW system?
2 each
What is the purpose of the alternator on the plant sump pumps?
Changes the lead pump for each cycle to equalize running time and wear on the two pumps
Why is there flow orifices installed in the discharge of the sump pumps?
To balance the flow to control pump run-out during one or two pump operation
What system provides lubrication to the Control building sump pump’s intermediate and case bearing?
What about the Diesel Generator building sump pumps?
Demineralized Water
Domestic Water
What starts and stops OW sump pumps on high or low level?
Float-type level control switches (first set for pump control, second set for alarm)
The Turbine Building OW system sump pumps normally send waste to oil/water separator. Where else can waste be sent to?
Chemical Waste Neutralizer Tank or LRS Holdup Tanks when required by the presence of chemicals or radioactivity in the wastes respectively
Where is the water from the non-class battery room floor drain directed to? Class battery room floor drain?
An Acid Neutralizing Sump prior to draining to the north condenser area sump
an acid neutralizing sump prior to the east or west control building sump, respectively
Generally, what type of water is collected in the Turbine Building Sump?
From areas that have the highest potential for oil to be present
What waste is received in the North Condenser Area Sump?
From the north and west areas of the turbine building
Also receives drains from the CST pump house
What waste is received in the South Condenser Area Sump?
From the south and east areas of the turbine building
What drains are collected in the OW West Control Building sump? Why are EWHX tube side drains directed to OW?
‘A’ train side of the Control building
‘A’ & ‘B’ Essential Cooling Water Heat Exchanger Tube Side drains
to prevent excessive influent to the RD system
The East Control Building sump collects drains from which train?
‘B’ Train
What is different about the OW waste drains from the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Cable spreading rooms?
They do not flow to the control building sumps
These areas are each drained separately to the ground outside the Control Building
Security screens are provided on the outside outlets of these two drains
What collects in the East and West Diesel Building Sumps?
Where do the two sump pumps from each side discharge to?
East Diesel Building sump collects drains from the ‘B’ Train
the west sump collects drains from the ‘A’ train side of the Diesel Building
oily water separator
What drains are received in the North Yard area sump?
Demin water storage tank and pumps
Auxiliary boiler and general area
Ground level Turbine building normal AHUs
(176’ turbine building AHUs and roof drains directed normally to circ water)
Where do the Yard Area sumps discharge to?
Circ Water Canal
What is the capacity of the Retention Tanks? Where are they located?
505,000 gallons
Plant west of the Unit 3 Spray Pond
What is the purpose of the Retention Tanks?
Receive effluent from Units 1, 2, and 3 Turbine Building Oil/Water Separators and CWNT Transfer Pumps
Who operates the Retention Tanks? What is done prior to sending CWNT contents to the retention tanks?
Water Resources
neutralize contents, sample, coordinate with WRF
At what level will a sump pump start to pump its associated sump? When would the second pump start? At what level does the first pump secure? Second pump?
80% level (high)
90% level (hi-hi)
20% level (lo)
10% level (lo-lo)
What is the purpose of the raised floor drain in the MTLO room?
to contain, in the case of a MTLO reservoir failure, the oil from the MTLO reservoir
there is also a floor drain valve that’s locked closed
What is the purpose of the pressure control valves in the lubrication lines to the OW sump pumps?
prevent over pressurization and excessive flow through the Sump Pump bearings
What is the purpose of the OW oil water separator?
a gravity and coalescing separator system that removes oil from the water it receives
What flows does the OW oily water separator receive?
turbine building and condenser area sumps
control building sumps
diesel building sumps
What prevents solids from getting sucked into the suction of the OW sump pumps?
inlet strainer
What is the operation of the OW sump pumps in hard start?
pump will run level to the LO-LO level and stop
when the LO-LO level clears, the pump will start again
Where are the OW sump pumps and Oily water separator sump motor space heaters powered from?
NH
O/W separator from a D-panel on an MCC
