OS- Lube Oil Purification, Storage, and Transfer Flashcards
What is the purpose of the OS system?
Remove contaminants from the Main Turbine Lube Oil and Feedwater Pump Turbine Lube oil to maintain the required lube oil quality
Provides lube oil storage for makeup and storage during outages
Transfers/recirculates lube oil from the storage tanks to the Main Turbine Lube Oil Reservoir and Feedwater Pump Turbine Lube Oil Reservoirs and between the reservoirs and the lube oil centrifuge or conditioner
What is the capacity of the OS Lube Oil storage tanks? Location? What surrounds the tanks to contain an oil leak?
20,000 gallons
North yard
concrete berm
What does Domestic Water system provide for OS?
Seal water to the OS system Feedwater Pump Turbine Lube Oil Centrifuge through a priming funnel
What powers the OS system centrifuge, conditioner and LO Transfer Pump?
NH
What does IA do for the OS system?
Provides air to the OSHA cover interlock control panel pressure instruments
Both storage tanks are maintained in a “clean” condition. Which OS storage tank can I send “dirty” oil to if necessary?
‘B’ Lube Oil Storage Tank
How are the OS Storage Tanks sized?
To hold the entire contents of both lube oil subsystems plus a contingency for oil in the process piping
Where is the OS Lube Oil Transfer Pump located?
Next to the Lube Oil storage tanks in the north yard
What type of pump is the OS Lube Oil Transfer Pump? What is upstream of the pump? What powers it?
Rotary gear
suction strainer
NH
How is the OS Lube Oil Transfer pump operated? What is its purpose?
Manually from a local hand switch
to move oil to/from the storage tanks to the reservoirs or out of the system to a waste truck for removal
What is the purpose of the Main Turbine Lube Oil Conditioner?
Removes water and particulates form the Main Turbine Lube Oil system by filtering action
At what rate can main turbine lube oil conditioner purify the Lube Oil?
30 gal/min or about 20% per hour of Main Turbine Lube Oil normal operating capacity (11,000 gallons)
Concerning the Main Lube Oil conditioner, which filter has a sight glass?
Filter #2 (where you can see the oil/water interface)
At what rate is the FWPT Centrifuge capable of purifying oil?
5 gpm which is equivalent to approximately 15% per hour of the combined operating capacity of the two lube oil reservoirs (about 2000 gallons)
What would cause the MFPT lube oil centrifuge package alarm bell to sound?
If any of the following occur:
Bowl loses its seal, (this causes a large flow of liquid to occur through the heavy phase outlet)
Low flow from heater
High vibration is sensed
Low air pressure
When would the break-over switch in the MFPT lube oil centrifuge activate an alarm and shut off the feed valve?
If one of the following occurs:
The bowl loses its water seal, (which causes a large flow of oil through the heavy phase outlet)
Sudden large flow of water flows through the heavy phase outlet caused by a possible cooler tube leak
What is the purpose of the OSHA interlock on the Main feed pump turbine lube oil centrifuge?
Automatically stops the centrifuge and alarms if the cover to the centrifuge is opened or if the cover clamps are loosened during centrifuge operation
The interlock also prevents starting the centrifuge if the cover is open
In general, how does the Main Turbine Lube Oil conditioner clean the Lube Oil reservoir?
Uses a series of filters and a coalescer/separator
How do we discard oil from the OS system?
A waste oil tanker truck can hook up to the storage tank and the dirty oil be pumped to the truck for discarding
What does the OW system receive from the OS system?
centrifuge waste water
the sludge is retained in a holding space within the centrifuge
When any of the lube oil reservoirs must be emptied, the oil can be pumped to which OS storage tank for storage and purification?
B tank
What features are provided with the OS storage tanks?
new oil fill connection, pump suction connection, level indicator, flush connection and a vent with flame arrestor
How is the plant affected by a loss of the OS conditioner or a centrifuge?
no immediate impact
eventually the lube oil would degrade in quality and negatively impact equipment
(the conditioner and/or centrifuge can be out of service for short periods of time)
What are the major components of the OS system?
two storage tanks
MFWPT lube oil centrifuge
MTLO conditioner(turbo toc)
lube oil transfer pump
MFWPT lube oil reservoir
MTLO reservoir
piping and valves
The main feedwater pump turbine lube oil reservoir and the main turbine lube oil reservoir may be connected to what for sending oil back and forth?
LO storage tanks and/or either the MFWPT lube oil centrifuge or the MTLO conditioner
(both can connect to everything)
In the OS system what is in-service during normal operation? During shutdown conditions?
centrifuges and conditioner
transfer pump and storage tanks
What does the MFWPT lube oil centrifuge consist of? What is the flow path of the skid?
centrifuge, feed pump, discharge pump, heater, filter, instrumentation and control package
feed pump, heater, centrifuge, discharge pump, filter, two lube oil reservoirs
Where can the OS lube oil centrifuge be aligned for recirculation?
MTLO reservoir, both FWPT lube oil reservoirs, LO storage tanks
can also purify oil during transfer of oil between reservoirs and storage tanks
Describe the flowpath through the centrifuge.
dirty oil enters the top of the revolving bowl through a tube, passes down the inside of a shaft into the stack of discs, up through the disc distribution holes to the center of the top disc
As the oil travels through, the dirt, sludge and water moves outward.
the water forms a seal around the bottom of the top disc to force the oil to the center
What trips the two speed, positive displacement pump in the MTLO conditioner package?
high vacuum switch (from the inlet strainer)
low flow switch
What are the main components of the MTLO conditioner package?
Inlet Strainer
High Vacuum Switch (trips the pump if the suction strainer is clogged)
Two speed positive displacement pump
Flow Indicator/Switch (trips the pump on low flow)
Electric Heater
Prefilter (Filter #1)
Coalescer/Separator (Filter #2)
Polishing filter (Filter #3)
Automatic Float Control Valve
Automatic Water Drain Valve
Auto Air Release
Instrumentation Panel
Control and Indication Panel
What amber lights are associated with the MTLO conditioner?
low flow
high vacuum
filter #1- prefilter
filter #2- coalesce/separator
filter #3- polishing filter
How is the flow rate of the MTLO conditioner pump changed?
shut the pump off, flip the flow rate switch
Regarding the MTLO conditioner, where is the removed water directed?
to the bottom of the #2 filter housing with an automatic float.
with enough water collected, the float will open the automatic water drain valve
What is the purpose of the varnish removal system within the OS system?
10 gpm system removes the soft contaminants in solution and in suspension from the oil breaking down.
