SP-Spray Ponds Flashcards
During normal op, what auxiliary systems does the Spray Ponds support?
Emergengy Diesel Generators
Essential Cooling Water
What does Essential Cooling Water (EW) Cool?
Essential Chillers, Shutdown Cooling HX, Fuel Pool Cooling, and Nuclear Cooling Water
During emergency op what are the Spray Ponds used for?
Ultimate Heat Sink (UHS)
Function: How does the Spray Pond system transfer heat loads? What system?
From essential cooling water and Diesel Generator coolers to atmosphere via UHS
What is the function of the UHS?
To provide sufficient cooling after a DBA LOCA
How does the Spray Pond system maintain chemistry?
By filtration, chemical addition, blowdown, and mixing.
What is the design of the Spray Pond system?
Two Trains with: Spray Pond, Spray Pond Pump, 20x4 spreay headers, ea w/ 4 nozzlles for a total of 320 nozzles, Filtration equipment, and chemical addition.
What is the Spray Pond capacity?
Seismic Cat 1 Essential Spray Pons are built for 13 days of capacity. With ponds cross connected 26 days of capacity.
What is the Mission Time for the spray ponds?
Inventory 26 days
components 30 days
What heat exchangers does the spray pond cool?
DG Air Intercoolers, DG jacket Water HX, DG Lube oil HX, and Essential Cooling Water HX.
Where does the spray pond cooling water flow in a shell and tube HX?
In the tube side it is then returned to the pond it came from and gets sprayed in the air where some evaporates.
What is the purpose of the spray pond filter pump?
Pumps is always running SP through the chemical treatment system.
What is the flow path of the spray pond filter pump?
Most flow goes through 3 filters and back to pond. 15 gpm flow to the SP recirc pumps through chemical addition header.
15-25 gpm goes to circ water canal for feed and bleed.
Where does makeup water to the spray ponds come from?
Domestic Water
Cooling Tower Makeup Makeup & Blowdown.
What is the purpose of the spary ponds?
Provide cooling for their train of EW and DG and dissipates heat to the atmosphere.
What is the operation of the spray ponds?
They are seismic cat 1 reinforced concrete. Each is about 350ft x 170ft and 15 feet deep
What is the operation of the spray ponds?
They are seismic cat 1 reinforced concrete. Each is about 350ft x 170ft and 15 feet deep to support:
heat load requirements, NPSH, operating range and instrument uncertainty, and wind caused wave action.
What modification did we make to SP for flow margin recovery?
We have a bypass valve that is normally locked closed. When a LOCA is initiated we will run water straight into pond and bypass spray nozzle for the 1st 6 days. After we close the valve.
Describe the purpose of the spray pond pumps?
Circulates water from the spray pond through their respective train of safety HX and back to the spray pond spray nozzles.
How does an essential spray pond pump operate?
One in each flow train. Wet-pit, CP, rated flow 16,000 gpm. Pump is above concrete sumps with screens and possible stop gates to keep debris out.
How is the Spray Pond Pumps started?
Manually from the Control Room.
What is the power supply for the Spray Pond Pumps?
Class 1E 4.16kV
What are the spray pond pump pre-start checks?
Before manually starting pump: Motor upper & lower bearing oil level satisfactory, Motor space heaters energized, and motor/pump coupling intact.
