Sound - Closed Pipes Flashcards
1
Q
closed pipe
A
- Closed Pipe is one that has one open end and one closed end. A good example is a soda bottle; the top is open, and the bottom is closed. If a sound wave at just the right frequency is introduced into the closed pipe, it will create a standing wave and make a loud sound.
- The difference between open pipes and closed pipes is what happens at the ends. With an open pipe, both ends are antinodes. With a closed pipe, the open end is an antinode, and the closed end is a node. That changes the wavelength of the waves inside the closed pipe, so the pattern of standing wave frequencies will be different than for an open pipe (or string).
