• Light changes speed when it passes from one transparent medium to another. One result is that the ray of light changes the angle at which it travels; it gets bent when it changes media.
• When a ray of light enters a medium with a higher index of refraction n, like passing from air to water, it gets bent inward, toward the normal.
• when a ray of light enters a medium with a lower index of refraction, like passing from water into air, it gets bent outward, away from the normal (or it might get internally reflected).
