Sound Flashcards
What is sound
A form of energy produced when objects vibrate, that is transferred in waves
Give two examples of sounds made by vibrations
A guitar string
A vibrating ruler on the edge of a table
Explain how sound travels
Object/vocal chords vibrate to produce a sound
Air molecules around it vibrate
Vibration energy passes through air molecules so they vibrate
Wave of vibration energy reaches eardrum and it vibrates aswell
Energy to eardrum allows for sound to be heard
What does sound need to travel
A medium to pass through
Explain an experiment to show that sound needs a medium to pass through
Place an electric bell into a bell jar. And using a vacuum pump while the bell is ringing gradually begin to suck the air from the jar
The bell will gradually sound fainter and then will not be heard because sound has no medium to pass through
How is an echo produced
Sound is reflected off smooth hard surfaces such as a wall
What is the speed of sound and the speed of light in m/s
Sound:340m/s
Light:300,000,000m/s
Give an example of the comparison of speed of sound to speed of light
Fireworks, you see the lights before you hear the explosion
Explain the frequency of a sound wave
How fast a sound wave is moving. Faster the sound moves the higher the pitch
Explain the amplitude of a sound wave
Determines the loudness of the sound
How is sound level measured and what is the loudest level of sound that can be listened to(pain threshold)
Measured in decibels (dB)
Highest:120dB
Above 85dB is damaging
