Magnetism Flashcards
Give four examples of uses of magnets
Electro magnet
Fridge magnets
Computers
Trains in Japan.
What is the end of a magnet called
Pole
What are the poles of a bar magnet called
North Pole
South Pole
What happens when like poles are put together
They repel
What happens when unlike poles Coke together
They attract
Explain magnetic field
The magnetic field is the space around a magnet n which a magnetic force can be detected
What direction does the magnetic field travel in
North to south
Explain how the earth’s magnetic field behaves
The earth behaves as if there is a giant bar magnet down its centre giving it a magnetic field.
Why does a compass always point north
The earth’s magnetic South Pole attracts the North Pole of the magnetic needle inside the compass and so the needle always points to geographical north (North Pole) or the earth’s south pole(magnet)
Explain compass
A compass is a magnetised needle that is used in navigation that is free to rotate to show direction.
Explain how to find a magnets magnetic field lines (two ways)
Compass:
Starting at the north poles of the magnet place a compass beside the magnet on a piece of paper. Draw a dot at where the arrow is pointing and then move the compass to this spot. Repeat this and dots should lead to South Pole
Iron filing: under a piece of paper hold a magnet just below the paper. Tap iron filings onto the paper and watch them line up along the magnetic field lines.
Name the three magnetic elements on the periodic table
Iron, nickel, cobalt
