Q

Why does a compass always point north

A

The earth’s magnetic South Pole attracts the North Pole of the magnetic needle inside the compass and so the needle always points to geographical north (North Pole) or the earth’s south pole(magnet)

Q

Explain how to find a magnets magnetic field lines (two ways)

A

Compass:
Starting at the north poles of the magnet place a compass beside the magnet on a piece of paper. Draw a dot at where the arrow is pointing and then move the compass to this spot. Repeat this and dots should lead to South Pole

Iron filing: under a piece of paper hold a magnet just below the paper. Tap iron filings onto the paper and watch them line up along the magnetic field lines.
