Skeletal System Flashcards
Name two types of joints
Fused or fixed joints
Freely moving joints
Explain fused or fixed joints
No movement between the bones. Ex. Skull.
What is a joint
A joint is where bones meet. Most joints allow movement
Name two types of moving joints
Ball and socket joints
Hinge joints
Give another name for free moving joints
Synovial joints
Give three functions of the skeleton
Support
Allows movement
Protection of vital organs
Explain synovial fluid
Liquid
Oils the joints and allows joint to move freely
Explain cartilage
Covers the end of bones
Protects the end of bones
Reduces friction.
What are muscles
Muscles are made of protein
They can contract and return to their normal length but not get longer
Muscles are attached to bones either side of a joint.
Explain tendons
Connects muscle to bone
Explain ligaments
Connect bone to bone
Explain antagonistic pairs
An antagonistic pair are two muscles which pull in opposite directions ex. Biceps and triceps
How to the biceps and triceps aid the movement of the joint at the elbow
The biceps contract and pull the arm up.
The triceps contract and pull the arm down.
What is the function of muscles and joints
To allow movement
Name the three main bones in the arm and leg
Arm- humerus, radius, ulna
Leg- femur, Tibia, Fibula.
