Q

Explain rust and how it’s formed

A

Rust is iron corrosion only. Iron in the presence of water combines slowly with oxygen in the air the form rust (iron oxide)

Q

How is corrosion prevented

A

Covering the metal with some material so as to prevent water and air making contact with it.

Q

Give four ways to prevent corrosion(and examples)

A

Painting(bike, ships)
Greasing/oiling (moving parts in machinery)
Galvanising ( coat with a large layer of zinc)
Chromium plating (coat with a shiny layer of chromium)-taps, towel rack

Q

Explain what is in each test tube for the experiment to investigate that oxygen and water are needed for rusting to occur

A

Test tube 1: calcium chloride absorbs moisture in test tube. Nail is placed inside and cork on top. No water- no rusting

Test tube 2: boiling water removes oxygen and the oil on top prevents oxygen from the air getting into the tube, nail is placed in tube. No oxygen- no rusting

Test tube 3: oxygen and water are present- rusting occurs
