Q

Name the parts of the respiratory system and their functions

A

The parts and functions of the breathing system:
the nose cleans, warms and moistens air
the trachea (windpipe) allows air to pass to and from the lungs
the bronchi ( Bronchus) allow air to pass to and from the trachea
the bronchioles allow air to pass to and from the alveoli
the alveoli allow gas exchange
the diaghram cause air to move in or out of the lungs.

Q

Briefly explain the gas exchange

A

oxygen passes from the alveoli into the blood

carbon dioxide and water pass from the blood into the alveoli.

Q

Explain how the diaphragm helps us to breath

A

When we beath in the diaphragm contracts downwards inflating the lungsby drawing air into the body and when we exhale the diaphragm relaxes allowing the air to flow out of the body and the lungs to deflate

Q

How does smoking affect us

A

Smoking damages health by:
clogging hairs in the nose
increasing mucous in the breathing system
increasing the risk of lung infections and cancers
increasing the risk of heart attacks
damaging the growth of a baby in the womb.

Q

Why does exceeding increase the breathing rate

A

Exercise increases the rate of breathing in order to
supply extra oxygen
remove the extra waste products formed during increased respiration.

Q

Explain the experiment: To compare the carbon dioxide levels of inhaled and exhaled air

A

Equipment
Test tubes, stoppers with two holes, tubing, clear limewater

Method
Place equal amounts of clear limewater in two test tubes
Place a layer of film over each test tube to deal it.
Place a straw through the film into each of the test tubes
In one test tube exhale in the other inhale
Repeat until the limewater in one of the test tubes turns milky.

Result
The limewater in a test tube turns milky as there is carbon dioxide present

Conclusion: limewater turns milky in the presence of carbon dioxide which we exhale.

Q

What is the difference between respiration and breathing

A

Respiration is a chemical process which releases energy from glucose. It occurs in all living cells and requires oxygen while it produces carbon dioxide and water.
Breathing is the way in which animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water.
