Somosensory system relays information through 4 modesalities. What are they?
Touch
temperature
pain
body position
Gate control theory
pain is carried by distinct fibers in the spinal cord
Cutaneous Pain
more towards the surface…like a paper cut
Will be sharp bright burning may have fast or slow onset.
Deep somatic pain
Stems from tendons muscles joints and blood vessels
Visceral Pain
originates from the organs and is hard to pinpoint
referred pain
pain that appears somewhere else…gall bladder is an example
acute pain
impending or actual tissue injury less than 6 months.
pupils dilate, bp rises, fight or flight kicks in
Chronic Pain
Pain greater than 6 months and no longer has autonomic responses any more…could be cancer pain or chronic non cancer pain.
Pain threshold
Point at which a stimulus is perceived as pain
Oral pain meds take how long to kick in
30 min to an hour
Iv Pain meds take how long to kick in
15 min
What is pain
Physiological response produced by activation of specific types of nerve fibers
pain is always subjective
