Sodium Bicarbinate Flashcards
Sodium Bicarbonate:class
bufferalkalanizing agentelectrolyte supplement
Sodium Bicarbonate:route
IV/IO
Sodium Bicarbonate:adult dose
1 mEq/kg IVP or IO
Sodium Bicarbonate:pedi dose
same as adult
Sodium Bicarbonate:drug action
reacts with hydrogen ions to form water and CO2 to buffer metabolic acidosis. as plasma hydrogen ion concentration decreases, blood pH rises.drives serum potasium back into the cellenhances urinary excretion of tricyclicsneutralizes acidosis by reacting with hydrogen ions to form water and carbon dioxide
Sodium Bicarbonate:indications
tricyclic antidepressant overdoseprolonged arrest in PEA/Asystole and upon ROSC in prolonged arresthyperkalemic cardiac arrests associated with renal failure or dialysismanagement of metabolic acidosis - DKA, ASA overdose, methanol ingestioncrush injuries
Sodium Bicarbonate:precautions
ensure and maintain adequate ventilation to eliminate CO2flush IV line well between all drugsassure IV patency - deactivates many drugs
Sodium Bicarbonate:side effects
metabolic alkalosistissue sloughing at site with infiltration
Sodium Bicarbonate:drug interactions
sodium bicarbonate may precipitate in calcium solutions, essentially makes chalkalkalization of urine may shorten elimintation half-lives of certain drugsvasopressors may be inactivated
Sodium Bicarbonate:contraindications
metabolic/respiratory alkalosissever pulmonary edemanot used routinely in cardiac arrests
