Calcium Chloride Flashcards
Calcium Chloride:class
electrolyte
Calcium Chloride:drug actions
inotropic effect;assists in vasoconstriction
Calcium Chloride:indications
hyperkalemia, except when associated with digitalis toxicity;hypocalcemia;calcium channel blocker toxicity;hypermagnesemia;prevention of hypotensive effects of calcium channel blocking agents
Calcium Chloride:contraindications
VFib during cardiac resuscitation;patients with digitalis toxicity;hypercalcemia
Calcium Chloride:side effects
bradycardia;hypotension;metallic taste;severe local necrosis and sloughing following IM use or IV infiltration
Calcium Chloride:drug interactions
calcium may worsen dysrhythmias caused by digitalis;calcium may antagonize the peripheral vasodilatory effects of calcium channel blockers
Calcium Chloride:adult dose
hyperkalemia and calcium channel blocker overdose:typical dose is 500-1000 mg, may be repeated as needed
Calcium Chloride:route
IV, <1 ml/min
Calcium Chloride:pedi dose
hyperkalemia and calcium channel blocker overdose:20 mg/kg IV, may be repeated if documented or clinical indication persists, do not exceed adult dose
Calcium Chloride:precautions
may produce vasospasm in coronary and cerebral arteries;do not use routinely in cardiac arrest;rapid administration may cause bradycardia and hypertension;monitor HR during administration
