Magnesium Sulfate Flashcards
Magnesium Sulfate:class
electrolyteanticonvulsant
Magnesium Sulfate:indications
elclamptic seizures;asthma refractory to Albuterol or Atrovent;Tordades de Pointes;hypomagnesmia;ventricular dysrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity
Magnesium Sulfate:contraindications
heart blocks;myocardial damage
Magnesium Sulfate:route
IV/IOIM
Magnesium Sulfate:side effects
diaphoresis;facial flushing;hypotension - circulatory collapse;depressed reflexes;hypothermia;bradycardia;flaccid paralysis;respiratory depression;CNS depression;cardiac depression
Magnesium Sulfate:drug actions
reduces striated muscle contractions;blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmission by reducing acetylcholine release at the myoneural junction
Magnesium Sulfate:drug interactions
DO NOT combine with:other CNS depressants;Digitalis
Magnesium Sulfate:adult dose
seizure associated with pregnancy:1-4 g IV w/ max dose of 30-40 g/daypulseless torsades de pointes or asthma:1-2 g diluted in 10 ml of D5W IV/IO pushtorsades w/ a pulse or AMI with hypomagnesemia:loading dose of 1-2 g in 50-100 ml of D5W over 5-60 min IV, follow with 0.5-1 g/hr IV, titrate to control torsades
Magnesium Sulfate:precautions
have calcium gluconate or calcium chloride available to counter act if needed
Magnesium Sulfate:pedi dose
pulseless torsades de pointes or torsades de pointes with a pulse:25-50 mg/kg IV/IO, max of 2 g, over 10-20 minasthma:25-50 mg/kg IV/IO, max of 2 g, over 15-30 min
