Dyadic interactions
One to one interaction with just the child and caregiver this creates an emotional rapport
Triadic interactions
Include the child, caregiver and an object in the environment. Where the child communicates with others about somthing in the world
Joint attention
Between 9 and 15 months
Initially the object referred to is present but overtime they can learn to discuss things not present.
Gaze following
Visually tracking where another individual is looking will inform the child on that individuals focus of attention
Social referencing
9-10 months
Infants start using non verbal and verbal cues of a trusted caregiver to gain information about a new object/ situation
Imitation
Children have a predisposition for imitating adults behaviour. 12 months old are more likely than 24 months old to imitate only the outcome of an adults action (opening the box) rather than imitating the process of the action (opening the box to use the tool)
Difference between imitate and emulate
Emulate- satisfies a cognitive motivation to learn about the world
Imitate- driven by a social motivation to promote a shared experience
Gestures
Emergence of intention communication
Imperative pointing
Performed to make the addresse do somthing for the subject. The subject uses the addresse as a tool in order to reach a goal
Declarative pointing
Defined as pre verbal effort to direct the adults attention to some event or objects
