Why do you need to know about phones which are not part of the English phonetic inventory?
- transcription of both typical and disordered speech eg articulation disorders and phonological disorders
-regional variations
-clients who speak languages other than English

Non pulmonic consonants
- Made by obstructing the vocal tract during exhalation and make up the majority of consonants in the IPA.
- Non pulmonic consonants are click, electives and implosives (they are all types of stop consonants)
- Children who have hearing loss are more likely to use non pulmonic sounds.
- All of these are uncommon except ejectives.
