Orlando date
1973
Orlando set up a
mock psychiatric ward in a hospital for three days
how many staff members volunteered to be the patients?
29
how many staff members volunteered to work on the ward?
22
the normal staff members were asked to
carry out their daily routines
it only took a little while for the patients so start
behaving like real patients in the hospital
it became difficult to
tell the real patients and the fake patients apart
the fake patients seemed to be
conforming to their roles as mental patients
many of the patients started showing signs of
depression and withdrawal and six even tried escaping from the ward
after the study, the mock patients said
they felt frustrated, anxious and nervous
some patients felt they had lost their
identity
studies like Orlando’s can allow researchers to gain a larger understand
on how real people feel in hospital
