Authoritarian Personality Flashcards
Adorno’s theory of the authoritarian personality is
dispositional explanation for obedience
dispositional
personality
Adorno et al date
1950
Adorno et al proposed that over-strict parenting results in a child being
socialized to obey authority unquestioningly
Adorno explained on this idea to argue
that strict parenting also results in prejudice
strict parenting means the child feels
constrained which creates aggression
but the child is afraid they’ll be
disciplined if they expressed this agression towards their parents
because the children can’t express their aggression towards their parents
they express their anger towards people who are weaker or inferior to them
Adorno et al defined the collection of traits that came from strict parenting as
the authoritarian personality
as well as aggression to people of lower status and blind obedience
the identifying traits include being conformist and having rigid moral standards
Adorno et al (1950) developed a
scale to measure how strongly people express authoritarian traits
Adorno et al: the measure used to measure authoritarian personality is called
the F scale
Adorno et al: what does the F stand for?
Fascism
Adorno et al: after the second world war, Adorno’s team was trying to find out if there are characteristics
that could explain the Nazi’s actions
