Social Impact Theory Flashcards
Latane and Wolf came up with the
Social Impact Theory
Social Impact Theory date
1981
Social Impact Theory states there are
three factors that effect social influence
the three factors are
strength
numbers
immediacy
strength
how powerful, knowledgeable and consistent the group appear to be
numbers
how many people are in the group
immediacy
how close the source of influence is to you
Latane and Wolf’s theory says that
minority influence happens through the same process as majority influence
minority/majority influence process
its just the balance of factors that create the social influence that’s different
the number of people in a minority is relatively small but
if the minority has strength and immediacy they can still exert social influence
a majority doesn’t need as much
strength or immediacy because they have the numbers
lots of studies have provided
support for social impact theory
Mullen date
1985
Mullen conducted a
meta analysis of studies investigated social impact theory
Mullen found that lots of them relied on
self report rather then observable behavior
