Social Psychology
- the study of how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the presence of others
Affiliation Motivation
the motivation to be part of relationships, to belong to groups, and to be accepted by others
Conformity
-altering one’s opinions or behaviours to match those of others
Descriptive social norms
what people actually do or think
Injunctive social norms
what people should think or feel
Why do people conform to norms

Informational influence
we do things because we believe it to be correct
Normative influence
the desire to belong and avoid being ostracized or excluded
Groupthink
when group decision making is impaired because of the desire to reach a consensus
compliance
a change in a person’s behaviour in response to a direct request
obedience
when we comply to the request of someone in a position of authority
Halo Effects
physical attractiveness will lead to more positive assumptions
Fundamental attribution error
we completely ignore situations to explain why people do the things they do
Situational attributions
looks at the situation a person is in to explain why they did what they did
Dispositional attributions
blames what a person did on the characteristics they have and will see their choices as a result of what kind of person they are
