Social Learning Theory (SLT) Flashcards
What is a role model?
A role model are people that we look up to, we aspire to be like them and admire them
They can have similar appearance, gender or even interest as us such as parents, friends, celebs etc``
What are the 3 different types of role models and define them
Symbolic - are factious characters
Verbal - like lyrics in song, what people say so auditory based stuff
Live - this is being face to face with them
Who discovered the variables that affected imitations and list what said discoveries was
Pennington (1986) discovered the variables
- Characteristics of the role model such as gender, age, status etc
- characteristics of the observer such as their self esteem and self efficacy (self belief that their able to copy said role model)
- the consequences of the behaviour for the model: basically are they being rewarded or punished
What is the technique that makes us imitate a behaviour and what are the different types?
Technique = Vicarious learning
Types:
- Vicarious reinforcement
- Vicarious punishment
- Vicarious extinction
Define Vicarious reinforcement and give an example
This occurs when you imitate the behaviour of someone who has already been reinforced for that behaviour
Example: sibling gets praised for eating with utensil (reinforced behaviour) hence copy’s it as they were being praised
Define Vicarious punishment and give an example
This occurs when that behaviour of being imitated is weakened after seeing that the negative consequence of it
Example: sibling gets punished for eating with hands (punished behaviour) hence doesn’t copy it as they don’t want to get punished
Define Vicarious extinction and give an example
This occurs when that behaviour stops being imitated as they observed that the behaviour is no longer being rewarded
Example: siblings no longer get rewarded with sweets or pocket money for doing chores or finishing their homework and its being witnessed hence they stop
