social learning theory in aggression AO3 Flashcards
supporting evidence
bandoras orgigiional bobo doll study found that children in age model condition made more aggressive responses than children in non aggressive model.
this suggests that children can learn aggression in absesne of concequewnces- adds valitity of SLT in aggression
limitation of bandoras research is that it took place in an artificial lab setting which makes aggression artificial and controlled.
bobo doll is different to a living person as it is designed to be hit and when it does get hit it doesn’t retaliate. thus raises questions about whether the children may haver been behaving as they thought was expected.
this suggests that although bandoras study helps to understand the role of vicarious learning in aggression, the findings cant be generalised to real life situations of aggression
strength of the methodology is that it has high internal validity
this is because bandoras research ia conducted in controlled conditions meaning researcher could manipulate the IV whilst controlling for potential confounding variables.
hugh control allowed researches to establish that slt processes may cause aggressive behaviour,
the theory can explain cultural differences in aggressive behaviour
un the kung sang culture individuals are not subjected to vicarious positive reinforcement of aggression bc social norms strongly discourage aggressive behavuoiyr and therefore there are no aggressive models to imitate. aggressive behaviour id relatively rare as there is little opportunity or motivation to acquire aggressive behaviour.
slt is useful theory to understanding aggression in the real world
a limitation of slt is that it underestimates the influence of biologicals factors in aggression.
this ism bc although bandora recognised they role of biology on aggression, he was clear that aggression is primarily learned / is outcome of nature. however, there’s research to suggest that there are powerful. genetic, neural hormones that undfulence aggression. slt barely acknowledges this.
suggests that slt is incomplete explaination of aggression as it underestimates the role of biological factors.
