deindividualisation A03 Flashcards

1
Q

there is supporting evidence for deindividualisation, based on real life aspects of aggression

A

mann analysed cases of as baiting crown and found that these insidents tend to occur in darkness when crowds were large and jumpers were relatively distant from crowd.

these findings increases validity of the idea that deindividualisattion causes aggression by showing a link between being in a crowd and being anonomus.

Q

there are methododigal issues with supporting evidence

A

thus use vc mcc his the research is correlational, finding a relationship between deindiviualisation and aggression, such as the stay by mann, as there is no iv manipulated, you cant make causal sstatemtn , you can sat deindividualisiation causes aggression.

this reduces the validity of dividvidualisation as an explaination for aggression.

Q

there is supporting evidence that is experimental

A

Johnson and downing asked female participants to administer pseudo electric shocks dressed as a member of the kkk, a nurse or in normal clothes. [articipants in kkk outfit gave higher shocks to confederates than other groups.

this suggests that when they’re discussed, they’re more likely to undertake in aggressive acts.

Q

there is contradictory research findings that deindiviualisation increases aggression

A

Gergen and Gergen places groups of 8 strangers in a darkened room for 60 minutes and told them they could do whatever they wanted, apart from identifying each other and would never see Rach other again. they quickly stopped talking and became physically intimate. in a second condition, they were told they would com face to face after and intimacy was much lower.

suggests deindividualisation doesn’t always lead to aggression.
