schizophrenia family disfunction evaluation Flashcards
supporting evidence
Vaughn and Jeff found 51% relapse rate in those from high ee homes compared to 13 % in low ee homes. additionally, relapse rates inc as face to face contact increased with high ee relatives.
Berger found schizophrenics recalled experiencing a higher amount of double bind communications by the9ir mothers compared to non schizophrenics
this adds validity of these explanations by showing that schizophrenia is linked to difficult family relationships.
opposing evidence
a weakness of any psychological explanation is that they are ultimately incomplete.
this is bc both cog and family models fail to take genetic factors into account despite there being strong evidence for hereditary. gottesman family study shows that the risk of developing schizophrenia if identical twin had the disorder is 48%. om Josephs twin study, the concordance rates of identical twin was 40%. you would expect this to be higher as they share all their genes.
this means that to account for all perspectives of the disorder we must incorporate psychological and biological factors.
reliability
many of these studies have been criticised in terms of their methodology as they are seen as unreliable.
this is bc much of the research is recorded retrospectively as info recorded about childhood experiences idd gathe4red after the development of symptoms and the schizophrenia may haver distorted patients recall of childhood experiences.
this shows that research into family dysfunction isn’t consistent.
debates
nature nurture debate is raised when edxpplaining schizophrenia.
twins ans 1st degree relatives share mot only genes but have had the same house environment for most of their lives. therefore its likely that both are influential to some degree and that schizophrenia is caused by an interaction of several factors. however, psychological explanations may have a role where there’s no family history of the disorder, hence its difficult to link the disorder to biological factors in these cases.
this means that its difficult to separate tier influences of nature and nurture in schizophrenia.
