frustration aggressive hypothesis A03 Flashcards
evidence to support
geen deliberately frustrated male students by giving them a jigsaw to complete that was actually impossible. participants were then asked to deliver electric shock to confederate who had made a mistake on another task.
frustrated participants gave more intense shocks than a control group who hadn’t experienced aggression.
this adds validiti to the frustration aggression hypothesis as it shows that the obstacle of completing the jigsaw goal created fraustration
more evidence to support
Newhall conducted a meta analysis of studies where aggression was directed at a human target other than the one that caused frustration. provoked participants who couldn’t retaliate against the original source were more likely to aggress against an innocent target than partici[ants who were not provoked.
this adds validity to fraustation aggression hypothesis in terms of displacement in weaker group
opposing evidenced
bushman found that frustrated participants who vented their anger by repeatedly hitting a punchbag actually became more aggressive in a later test, rather than reducing aggression.
suggests aggression isn’t cathartic, so weakens the validity of there hypothesis
the hypothesis ism considered determinist
it doesn’t take into account free willl and moral values, eg a pacifist isn’t likely to resort to aggression when experiencing frustration.
therefore it isn’t universally applicable.
the frustration hypothesis has practical applications
Berkowitz contends that presses of aggressive environmental cues stimulates aggression. the finger pulls the trigger but the trigger may be pulling the finger. this has been featured in gun control debate wether some states allow open carry, where as gun doesn’t have to be concealed. there is concern that open precedes of a weapon can act as a trigger to aggression, making its use more likely.
therefore can improve the lives of people in the real world.
