schizophrenia drug therapy evaluations Flashcards

1
Q

evaluation -typical antipsychotics strength

A

there is supporting evidence for their effectiveness

this is because ben thorny et al reviewed studies comparing the effects of chlorpromazine to control conditions in which people w schizophrenia received a placebo so their experiences were identical except for the presence of chloromazine in their medication. data collected from 13 trials with total og 1121 people showed chlorpromazine associated with overall functioning and reduced symptoms.

this supports there effectiveness of typical antipsychotics in managing the experience of symptoms of schizophrenia

Q

eval of typical antipsychotics- weakness

A

opposing evidence

this is because long term use of typical antipsychotics can result in trade dyskinesia. this caused by dopamine sensitivity and manifests involuntary facial movements such as grimacing.

furthermore, typical antipsychotics can lead to neurotic malignant syndrome. this can be caused by blocking dopamine action in hypothalamus.

this means that these side effects can be so distressing, patients may stop taking the medication, which ultimately means that the drug is ineffective.

Q

eval of atypical antipsychotics strength

A

they have some advantages compared to typical antipsychotics.

this is because they have less side effects than typical antipsychotics. they done cause extraprymidial side effects.

however people taking clozapine must have regular blood tests to check for agranulocytosis

this mrsnd side effects of atypical antipsychotics are well managed snd therefore patients are more likely to continue taking their medication which messed they’re ultimately effective.

this means that patients on atypical antipsychotics may be more likely to keep taking their medication, which ultimately means that they are more likely to be an effective treatment.

Q

eval for both therapies- ethics

A

weakness is that there are ethical issues

antipsychotics hotels are used to calm patients and make them easier to manage and control which is seen as a human rights violation, and are often referred to as chemical straight jackets.

ross and read argue that antipsychotics reinforce the patients view that three is somethingwerong eat them which reduces their motivation ti look for possible stressors that contribute to their condition.

this means that patients taking antipsychotics are less likely to seek solutions that might reduce their suffering which may ultimately be damaging for their recovery.
