Q

What is the difference between altruism and inclusive fitness?

A

Altruism is the broader term for behaviors that cost the individual something but help others. In this example, the meerkat is putting itself in danger to warn its herd of danger. Its for the good of the group that may or may not share the same genetics.

Inclusive fitness is the specific term for the idea that genes can be selected for on the GROUP level. This is a way to explain altruistic acts; if a bison sacrifices itself so that its family can survive, some of its genes are still being passed on and selected for. Similarly, the lioness sacrifices herself to save her family members, many of whom likely share some of her genes.
