social facilitation Flashcards
social facilitation
when arousal stimulated by the presence of an audience has a positive effect in performance
social inhibition
when arousal stimulated by the presence of an audience has negative effects on performance
factors affecting social facilitation
personality type, skill type, stage of learning
personality factor
introverts: sensitive RAS, easily aroused, likely to cause social inhibition
extroverts: not easily over-aroused, likely to cause social facilitation
stage of learning
beginners: dominant response likely to be incorrect so social inhibition occurs
experts: well grooved dominant responses so social facilitation likely
skill type (simple and complex)
audience adds to info needed to be processes
simple skills: don’t require much info so social facilitation
complex skills: lots of info so social inhibition (distraction conflict)
skill type (gross and fine)
gross: no high levels of precision, audience facilitates performance
fine: high levels of precision, audience increases arousal so inhibition
evaluation apprehension
performer perceives the audience is judging them so Inhibits performance
- e.g someone knowledgeable able to form valid opinions like a scout etc.
strategies
mental rehearsal, form positive dominant responses, positive reinforcement, practice infront of an audience
Zajonc’s factors affecting performance
- presence of an audience increases arousal
- increases in arousal trigger dominant responses
- if the skill is well learned, response will be correct
- if the skill is new or poorly learned response will be incorrect
