anxiety
a state of apprehension, worry, uneasiness or eagerness
- can be state or trait
state anxiety
an individuals immediate but temporary level of anxiety in a particular situation e.g. stepping up to take a penalty
trait anxiety
a persons innate and enduring inclination to perceive things as threatening, its stable (unchanging)
somatic responses
physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, blood pressure
cognitive responses
thoughts or worries about their ability to perform the task successfully
zone of optimal function
- athlete A: in the zone in low anxiety, out the zone in moderate and high anxiety
- athlete B: in the zone at medium anxiety, out the zone at low and high anxiety
- athlete C: in the zone at high anxiety, out the zone in moderate and low anxiety
cue utilisation
concentrating on relevant cues at the particular time, keeping focus and controlling anxiety and arousal. stops the performer from being easily distracted
competitive anxiety factors
individual differences, trait and state anxiety, general or specific anxiety, competition process
cognitive management techniques
positive thinking, negative thought stopping, mental rehearsal, and imagery
somatic management techniques
yoga, massages, breathing techniques, and biofeedback
