Attribution Flashcards
define attribution
the reason a performers or coach gives for causes of success or failure
process of attribution
1) outcome of event
2) available info
3) causal attribution
4) expectancy & affective response
5) decision on subsequent participation
locus of causality
can be internal/external, stable/unstable
internal stable LOC
attributions: ability
success: builds confidence
failure: shame increases, confidence knocked
external stable LOC
attributions task difficulty
success: doesn’t increase confidence or motivation
failure: decreases confidence and motivation
internal unstable LOC
attributions: effort
success: increases motivation to try hard again
failure: increases motivation to be better next time
external unstable LOC
attribution: luck
success: doesn’t build confidence
failure: masks issues
effect of effort for success
- the performer takes credit due to their effort
- raises self confidence
- encourages mastery orientation
effect of effort for failure
- acknowledges that failure was due to insufficient prep
- gives them control over future success
define learned helplessness
the belief that failure is inevitable and no control can be had over the cause of failure
effects of learned helplessness
- leads to low confidence, and performer giving up easily if success isn’t quickly achieved
- a barrier to improving
define mastery orientation
a high achiever who has a strong desire to succeed and expects to succeed
effects of mastery orientation
- high confidence
- persistent and take on challenges
- allows performance to be optimised
- encouraged by mastery success/failure to internal unstable factors
