Why do performers use blood doping
Perform better in competitions by increasing performers red blood cell count
How is blood doping carried out
Blood is taken 3-4 weeks before event when haemoglobin levels are high
Freeze the blood to maintain high haemoglobin levels
One or two days before the event the blood is put back into the performer through blood transfusion
This will increase red blood cells in body to carry more oxygen
This allows performer aerobic capacity to increase to perform longer without fatigue
Side effects of doping
Increased chance of heart attacks
Kidney diseases
Risk of infection when transfusion of blood
