Skill acquisition and psychology 1 Flashcards
Skill and ability Skilled performance Skill classification Simple information processing model
What is the difference between skill and ability
Skill is an ability that is learned which allows you to perform with maximum efficiency
Ability is the characteristics the person is born with such as speed or flexibility
What are some factors affecting skill level
Age and maturity Culture Teaching/coaching Environment Facilities
What are some characteristics of a skilled performance
Fluent Aesthetically pleasing Consitent cooridnated accurate
What are closed skills
Skills that are not affected by environment
What are open skills
Skills that are affected by environment which allows performer to adjust to situation
What are basic and complex skills
Basic:Simple skills such as catching and throwing
Complex: Skills that require higher levels of coordination and concentration such as serving in tennis
What are fine and gross skills
Fine: Precise movements that require high Lebel of technique and accuracy. Usually smaller movements
Gross: large and powerful movements that use larger muscle groups
What are the stages of the information processing model
Input
Decision making
Output
Feedback
What is the input stage
Information the performer receives
Performer hears, feels, sees the situation
When the information is processed the performer decides what to focus on
What is the decision making stage
Information is analysed by performer to find best response for sitauation
Information is rehearesed in STM (short term memory).
Multiple time rehearesed will lead to it being stored in LTM (long term)
Experienced performers have more information stored in LTM because of the amount of rehearse is done
What is the output stage
Decision is chosen and acted upon
Brain sends information to muscles where the muscles perform the skill or action
What is the feedback stage
Information is received about output, Wether decision was good or bad
This knowledge is stored and used for future decisions
Performer receives information through intrinsic or extrinsic feedback
What is the difference between short term and long term memory
STM: Stores small amount of information for brief period: Around 60 seconds
LTM:Memory that stores big amounts of information for a long period
What is limited channel capacity
The fact that the brain can only process a certain amount go information, too much information results in overload
What is Single channel hypothesis
Theory that when receiving too much stimuli from environment, Brain can only deal with one stimulus at a time
