Obsession

A

Unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant distress. Examples:
Contamination obsessions: fear of germs or dirt
Harm obsessions: fear of causing harm to oneself or others
Intrusive thoughts: violent or disturbing images
Nature: not voluntary or pleasurable, obsessions are often recognized as excessive or irrational

Compulsion

A

Behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the distress from obsessions. Examples:
checking: repeatedly checking locks, stoves, or appliances
washing: excessive handwashing or cleaning
counting or repeating: counting items or repeating actions mentally
purpose: compulsions are often done to neutralize the obsession, even of the action is unrelated or excessive

social: higher dropout rates, lower productivity, lower SES, being unmarried, reduced quality of life, etc.

OCD: avoid relationships to protect others, delays in performance due to perfectionism, avoidance of medical settings, etc.

A

compulsions are done in response to obsessions. the goal of compulsions is to prevent or reduce anxiety surrounding obsessions, but only have temporary relief, leading to repetitive behaviors
