MDD and PDD Flashcards
What gender differences are there in the presentation (e.g., the symptoms experienced) of MDD?
boys display more anger symptoms while girls display more sadness symptoms
Please describe the main differences and similarities between MDD and PDD. Please identify differences in
MDD’s and PDD’s on duration, symptom severity, onset, symptom patterns, functional impairments, and
diagnostic criteria.
DURATION: MDD; at least 2 weeks, episodic, does not last as long
PDD; at least one year for kids, no break for longer than 2 months
SEVERITY: MDD; more severe, more impact on daily functioning
PDD; milder, more chronic. function well with a low mood
ONSET: MDD; suddenly, can be triggered
PDD; gradually, may not recognize onset
PATTERNS: MDD; may have periods of feeling ok
PDD; may have periods of less severe symptoms, never fully feel ok
FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENTS: MDD; social, occupational, etc.
PDD; life, relationships, work
DIAGNOSTIC: MDD; 5 of 9 core symptoms
PDD; 2 or more core symptoms, longer duration
Why is low self-esteem most strongly related to depression in adolescents and less strongly related to depression in children or adults?
Adolescents place a lot of value on peer relationships and it is the time where most compare themselves to others and their opinions are the harshest
Identify all four parts of a safety plan for an individual who expresses suicidal ideation. Specifically, identify
the 5 steps/activities that should be included in the “activities” section of a safety plan.
Identify warning signs, activities {increasing social support, engaging the senses, physical activity, cognitively stimulating, repeat}, emergency numbers
Describe the negative cognitive triad and how this triad impacts the way a child with depression thinks and acts.
a negative view about yourself turns into a neg view of the world turns into a neg view of the future turns into a neg view of yourself, etc.
It can send them deeper into depression if the get pulled into the downward spiral
What are the diagnostic criteria for MDD in the DSM?
depressed mood, diminished interest in activities, weight loss or gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, diminished ability to concentrate, recurring thoughts of death
What are the diagnostic criteria for PDD in the DSM?
depressed mood for 2 years (1 yr for kids), no mania, same as MDD
What can low mood be replaced with in MDD or PDD for children? Why is this modifier there?
Irritable mood, they might not know how to interpret/express their mood and could express it as anger
