What is Dehydration?
The loss of water and salts essential for normal body function.

It means taking on water
What is metabolic rate?
Rate at which metabolic processes take place; the rate at which a body uses up energy
What is a diuretic?
Drug to make you produce more urine
What are the seven elements of a balanced diet?
Carbs,Proteins,Minerals,Vitamins ,Fats, Water, fibre
What are carbs used for?
Stored in liver and muscles as glycogen and then quickly converted into glucose to provide energy
What are the 2 types of carbs?
Complex and simple
What do complex carbs do?
Release a slower and longer lasting release of energy
What are example of complex carbs?
bananas, brown rice, wholemeal pasta
What are simple carbs?
Quicker release of energy
What are examples of simple carbs?
(natural fruit and vegetables) (refined biscuits,cakes)
What are fats used for?
Provide energy and together with glycogen they help the muscles to work. 30% of total diet
Where are fats found?
Fats found in butter, margarine and cooking oils
What are TWO possible benefits of drinking water during an event like a triathalon?
. The individual will stay hydrated which helps to avoid early fatigue
. It allows them to sweat which helps maintain the core body temperature
What are examples of micronutrients?
Vitamins, minerals and fibre
What are examples of macronutrients?
Carbohydrates, fats and protein
What factors affect optiumum weight?
Sex, height, bone structure and muscle girth
Explain how the optimum weight of a power athlete (PA) may vary from that of an endurance athlete (EA)?
PA will have increased muscle mass meaning he will be heavier and this increases his optimum weight. An EA’s muscle mass is much lower meaning his optimum weight will be less than the PA’s
