Soc 21 - Planes and Axes of Movement Flashcards
How many planes are there to describe movement?
There are 3
What are the 3 planes?
Sagittal, Frontal and Transverse planes
What movements occur at the Sagittal plane?
Flexion and Extension
What axis does the Sagittal plane rotate around?
Rotates around the frontal axis
What is an example of a Sagittal plane?
A front somersault
What is a Sagittal plane?
A Sagittal plane divides the body from top to bottom vertically resulting in a left and right side
What is a Frontal plane?
A Frontal plans divides the body from top to bottom vertically but front and back sections
What is a Transverse plane?
A Transverse plane divides the body across the middle (horizontally) giving a top section (superior) and a bottom section (inferior) rotation.
What movements occur at the Frontal Plane?
Abduction and adduction
What axis does the Frontal plane rotate around?
Rotates around the Sagittal axis
What is an example of a Frontal plane?
A cartwheel
What movement occurs at the Transverse plane?
Rotation
What axis does the Transverse plane rotate around?
Rotates around the vertical axis
What is the example of a Transverse plane?
A trampoline twist
What characteristics are there of a forward somersault?
You move forward, left and right sides move in sync in the (sagittal plane). The body bends on a line that runs horizontally from side to side - around the frontal axis.
