Q

What is stroke volume?

Heart ST

A

The amount of blood pumped by the heart during each beat. - this will increase during physical activity as muscles need more blood

Q

When someone trains regularly what happens to their heart?

Heart ST

A

Heart is more efficient, stroke volume increases, heart rate decreases, heart is bigger in size, thickness and strength.

16
Q

What is the process called when there is a buildup of lactic acid?

A

Lactate accumulation

17
Q

What does lactate accumulation do to your muscles?

A

It causes them to feel painful and tired

18
Q

How can cramps be affected?

A

If a sportsman is hot, tired, dehydrated or has a poor fitness level

19
Q

Would a trained athlete’s heart rate be low or higher than someone who is not as fit? Why?

A

It would be lower because exercise strengthens the heart muscle meaning it pumps a greater amount of blood with each heartbeat and this results in more oxygen being delivered to the muscles.

20
Q

What is oxygen debt?

A

The amount of oxygen required to remove the lactic acid
