Soc 19 - Short Term Effects of Exercise Flashcards
What are the three short term effects of exercise?
Muscle, heart and breathing
What is muscle fatigue?
Muscle short term) (ST
It is when muscles feel weak, painful and tired
What does muscle fatigue result from?
Muscle ST
Usually occurs as a result of anaerobic respiration
What will there be a build up of if there isn’t enough oxygen?
(Muscle ST)
There will be a build up of lactic acid
What is a cramp?
Muscle ST
A severe form of muscle fatigue which causes the muscles to contract in pain.
What happens to heart when you exercise?
Heart ST
It beats faster
What is heart rate?
Heart ST
The number of times your heart beats per minute
What is knowing the time taken for your heart to return to resting heart rate after exercise good for?
(Heart ST)
To see how fit you are (your fitness levels)
What is stroke volume?
Heart ST
The amount of blood pumped by the heart during each beat. - this will increase during physical activity as muscles need more blood
When someone trains regularly what happens to their heart?
Heart ST
Heart is more efficient, stroke volume increases, heart rate decreases, heart is bigger in size, thickness and strength.
What is cardiac output?
Heart ST
Amount of blood pumped by heart in one min
How do you work out the cardiac output?
Stroke volume x heart rate
When exercising you bring in oxygen, what do you get rid of?
Breathing ST
You get rid of carbon dioxide
When exercising does depth and rate of breathing increase or decrease?
(Breathing ST)
Increases
When you use up more oxygen than you take in when exercising hard what happens?
(Breathing ST)
You are in oxygen debt
