Soc 18 - Aerobic + Anaerobic Respiration and Energy Systems Flashcards
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen ——> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is aerobic respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose, using oxygen
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —–> energy + lactic acid
What is anaerobc respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose, without oxygen
Is aerobic respiration with or without oxygen?
It is with oxygen
What is aerobic exercise?
Working at a moderate intensity giving body time to utilise oxygen for energy production and to work for a continous period (long distance events)
What is lactic acid?
An acid produced in the muscle tissues when the body exercises anaerobically at high intensity
What is a cramp?
Painful, involuntary contraction of a muscle, usually caused by fatigue
What are the wate products of aerobic respiration?
Carbon dioxide and water
What is glucose?
A major source of energy for most cells in the body
What type of exercise intensity does carbs source for?
It sources for high intensity exercise
What type of exercise intensity does fats source for?
It sources for low intensity exercise
Where are fats found in?
Found in butter, margarine and cooking oils
For moderate intensity exercise where does energy come from?
It will be provided equally by carbohydrates and fat.
What happens to fatty acids that aren’t need straight away?
They will be stored in fat cells
What should your daily intake of fats be considering your total diet?
No more than 30%
Do your body cells use carbs more easily or fat?
Uses carbs more easily
When you eat carbohydrates what are they broken down into?
Into glucose or glycogen.
What can glucose or glycogen be absorbed through?
Through the walls of the small intestine and into the blood
After glucose is passed into the blood where is it transported to?
It is transported to the liver and then circulated around the body
What happens to some of the excess glucose?
It is stored in the liver and ready to be distributed if your blood glucose levels get too low
What happens to the rest of the glucose that isn’t used by the cells
They are turned into fat for long-term storage
How long before training or a game should you have a meal?
At least two hours before
What happens if you eat large amounts of food directly before a competition or training?
It will divert the blood away from the muscles that you need for performance
What are examples of complex carbs?
Brown rice or wholemeal pasta
What are examples of simple carbs?
Glucose and fructose
What do complex carbs help provide?
Long-lasting energy for exercise
What do simple carbs provide?
Quick fix of energy
