Soc 17 - The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is respiration?
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
What is the diaphragm?
The primary muscle used in the process of inspiration, or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the rest if the body cavity.
What is the trachea?
The tube that takes air into the chest
What is the bronchus?
A tube along which air passes from the trachea to the lungs
What are bronchioles?
Smaller branches coming of the bronchi
What are alveoli?
Tiny sacs at the end of bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place
What is haemoglobin?
A type of protein found in every red blood cell
What is gaseous exchange?
The delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the tissues
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
Working at a high intensity level without oxygen for energy production
What is VO2 max?
The volume of oxygen that. An athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity
What is the percentages for air you breath in?
20% oxygen and 0.4% carbon dioxide
What is the percentage of air you exhale?
16% oxygen and 4% carbon dioxide
What is tidal volume?
Is the amount of air inspired and expired with each normal breath at rest or during exercise
What is vital capacity?
The greatest amount of air that can be passed in and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
