Soc 17-The Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory system
There are 3 major parts of the respiratory system: the airway, the lungs, and the muscles of respiration.
Breathed in
21% oxygen
0.04% carbon dioxide
Breathed out
16% oxygen
4% carbon dioxide
Vital capacity
Vital capacity is the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation.
Tidal volume
Tidal volume is the amount of air breathed in with each normal breath.
Respiration
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
Diaphragm
The primary muscle used in the process of inhalation
Trachea
The tube that takes air into the chest
Bronchus
Tube along which air passes from the trachea into the lungs
Bronchioles
Smaller branches coming off the bronchi
Alveoli
Tiny sacs at the end of the brioncholes
Haemoglobin
A type of protein found in every red blood cell
Gaseous exchange
The delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloddstream
Oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity
Anaerobic exercise
Working at a high intensity level without oxygen
