Soc 15/16 - Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Cardio - respiratory system
The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
Cardiovascular
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels togther
Vasodilation
When veins swell up or dilate; widening of the internal diameter ( lumen ) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow
Vasconstriction
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter ( lumen ) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow
What are the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system
Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
It helps blood clots
It controls the body’s temperature
Vascular shunting
Your muscles need more blood for movement amd so move away from the organs to the muscles
Your heart starts to beat faster and your blood vessels constrict into order to divert the blood to the muscles
Your reflexes get faster and your muscles may tense up
Arteris
. Take blood away from the heart
. Arteris take blood away from the heart
. Allows more blood to flow through
. Pulmary artery carries deoxygenated blood
Veins
. Carry blood into the heart
. Much thinner walls, carry blood at a lower pressure
. Veins contain many vavles which helps deoxygenated blood flow to heart
. Carries deoxygenated blood from lungs back to the heart
Capillaries
. Microscopic vessels - just one cell thick
. Carry oxygenated blood which tranfers oxygen and nutrients to te muscles
. Carry deoxygenated bloood into the veins
. Gaseous exchange take place
Immune system
the structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
Thrombokinase
substance involved in blood clotting.
Serotonin:
hormone that triggers the clotting process.
Plasma:
the fluid part of blood.
Erythrocyte:
red blood cell.
Haemoglobin:
a red protein in the blood that transports oxygen.
