Soc 12 - Skeletal System Flashcards
5 functions of the skeletal system
Protection of vital organs
Muscle attachment joints
Joints for movement
Strong calcium and phosphorous
Red and white blood cell production
Sections of the vertebrae
Cervical (7)
Thoracic (12)
Lumbar (5)
Sacrum (5)
Coccyx (4)
What is a flat bone
Usually protect organs. Flat bones protect organs in contact sports
What are Short bones
Are generally the same size in length, width and thickness. The only short
Where is the femur
Quad
Where is the patella?
Knee
Where is the clavicle
Color bone/shoulder
Where is the pelvis
Hip
Where is the radius
Outer forearm
Where is the ulna
Inner fore arm
Where is the sternum
In between the rib cage/ chest
Where is the humeras
Elbow
Where is the tibia
Shin
Where is the phalanges
Front toe
Where is the metetarsals
Mid foot
Where is the tarsals
Ankle /back foot
Irregular bones
Odd shapes and vary in function, they offer protection .eg vetebrae
What are long bones
Longer than they are wide, help generate movement
What are the classification joints
Pivot
Hinge
Ball and socket
Condyloid
What does a pivot joint do
Allow bones to rotate
What does a hinge joint do
Allows only backward and forward motion
What does ball and socket joints do
Allows movement in a various of different way
What does a condyloid joint do
Allows very complex movements
