What are they indicated for?
Depression
Generalised anxiety disorder
What is duloxetine indicated for as well?
Diabetic neuropathy
How does it work?
They inhibit reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline. They also increase availability of monoamines for neurotransmission improving mood and physical symptoms of depression
What are the side effects of this drug class?
GI upset
Nausea
Change in weight
diarrhoea or constipation
dry mouth
hyponatraemia
serotonin syndrome
Prolong QT interval- venlafaxine
What are the warnings for these drugs?
Cauion in older patients due to more risk of adverse effects
Dose reduction in hepatic or renal impairment- duloxetine should be avoided
What possible interactions can other with this drug class and other drugs?
serotonin syndrome when given with other antidepressants or drugs that effect serotonin
