Schizophrenia particularly if extrapydramidal side effects of fist-generation occur
Bipolar disorder
What drug in this class is more effective in refractory schizophrenia?

How do they work?
Block post-synaptic dopamine D2 receptors
What are the side effects of these drugs in the class?
More tolerated than first generation.
Less common drowsiness and cognitive impairment
Weight gain
Diabetes mellitus
Lipid changes
Prolong QT interval
What side effects can occur with risperidone?
Affect regulation of prolactin causing breast symptoms in men and women
Sexual dysfunction
What side effects occur with clonzapine?
Severe deficiency of neutrophils (agranulocytosis
Myocarditis
What are the warnings of this drug class?
Caution in cardiovascular disease
What must clozapine not be used in?
severe heart disease or people with a history of neutropenia
What drugs do they interact with?
Sedation can be more pronounced when used with other sedating drugs
Should not be combined with antiemetics that block dopamine D2 receptors
Should not be used with drugs that prolong QT interval
