What is it indicated for?
Prophylaxis and treatment of nausea and vomiting particularly in motion sickness or vertigo
How do they work?
They inhibit histamine receptors in the vomiting centre
What are the side effects of these drugs?
Drowsiness- cyclizine is the least sedating
Dry throat and mouth- can be beneficial with patients that have copious mucosal secretions
After IV injection they may cause tachycardia and palpitatons
What are the warnings of this drug class?
Should be avoided in people at risk of hepatic encephalopathy
Should be avoided in patients susceptible to anticholinergic side effects such as prostatic enlargement who may develop urinary retention
What drugs do they interact with?
Sedation can be greater when combined with benzodiazepines, opioids
Anticholinergic effects may be greater in people taking ipratropium or tiotropium
What are examples?
cyclizine, promethazine, cinnarizine
