Acute migraines

How do they work?
A
Not fully understood but they inhibit neurotransmission and constrict cranial blood vessels

What are the side effects of these drugs?
A
Chest and throat discomfort
Nausea
Vomiting
Tiredness
dizziness
Rarely cause angina or MI

What are the warnings for this drug class?
A
Due to their vasoconstrictor properties they should not be used in
ischaemic heart disease, ✖ cerebrovascular disease, ✖ peripheral vascular disease, and ✖ uncontrolled hypertension
or hemiplegic migraines and migraine with brainstem aura

A
Serotonergic drugs increased risk of serotonin syndrome
