enhance binding of GABA to the GABAA receptor causing reduced anxiety, sleepiness, and sedation

Rebound insomnia- may occur when drug is stopped
Headache
Confusion

GI upset

Can Z-drugs cause dependence?
A
Yes 4 weeks can lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms on stopping

What are the warnings for these drugs?
A
Caution in older people
Do not prescribe in obstructive sleep apnoea, respiratory muscle weakness or respiratory depression
