What did Slave trade captains have to do when they arrived in America and West Indies? And why?
Freshen them up because in order to get more money the slaves had to look good.
What are some examples of what slave owners did to make the slaves look better?
Pliers were used to remove rotten teeth
Tar was used to cover scars on the slaves backs from the whip
A scrubbing brush was used to clean them as the Slaves had been kept in dirty and smelly conditions
A razor was used to remove any grey hair from older slaves
What did the captains do to make the slaves look shinier and make muscles bigger?
Coated them in oil to look shinier and highlighted muscles to make them look stronger.
What did being branded mean?
Being branded was when the slaves were identified as somebodies property of a certain trader and later on a certain owner.
What did many slaves not get to own anymore?
Slaves names, they were changed to English names so the owners did not have to go through the trouble of learning to pronounce it.
What was a scramble?
A scramble was an unorganised sale where, buyers would run in and grab the slaves they wanted.
Where were auctions for slaves held?
They were held in ships and sometimes local market square on the side of docks
