In the 1800 how many capital crimes were there?
In the 1800 there were over 200 capital crimes which you could be hanged for.
Where were hanging carried out in London?
In London they were carried out at Tyburn, where Marble Arch stands today
What was considered entertainment where people would go on days out to watch?
The public really enjoyed watching a hanging and would go on days out to see them.
Why were punishments so harshly punished?
Many people felt that criminals should be savagely punished so as to act as a warning to others to not do it, it was a deterrent.p because they did not have a police force.
When was there a huge increase in crime
There was a huge increase in crime during the 18th century
What did big towns make it easier for?
The big new towns made life easier for criminals.
Where did child criminal kids end up?
Criminal kids often ended up in England’s filthy jails or even on prison transport ships
Why weren’t criminals usually caught?
Criminals were usually not caught because were no police to track them down.
Why were far fewer hangings taken place then meant to?
Far fewer people were hanged than should have been. Juries often took pity on young children and said they were not guilty, rather than have them hanged. Or they were found guilty of a less serious crime.
What did bigger towns have as well as constables?
The bigger towns had watchmen, as well as constables
What were watchmen nicknamed?
Watchmen were nicknamed ‘Charleys’.
What did watchmen do?
Their job was to patrol the streets and keep a look out for anything suspicious.
What were watchmen paid?
They were paid but it could be as little as 25p a week.
