Where did people from the countryside move to during the Industrial Revolution and why?
Industrial Revolution workers flocked from the countryside to the towns to work in factories.
What were built quickly and why?
Lots of houses were built very quickly so that the workers had somewhere to live.
What did small villages grow into because of the population?
Places that were small villages grew into towns and small towns grew into big cities.
What were wrong with these houses that were built quickly for the growing population?
These houses lacked basic living conditions such as floors and space.
What were factories and workshops powered by and what did this cause?
All workshops and factories were powered by coal-burning steam engines, this caused lots of smoke coming from the chimneys which polluted the air.
What was the result of there being no sewers and waste being thrown or dumped into pits?
It was common for this waste to find itself into the rivers
Where did water for cooking, cleaning and drinking come from and why was this bad?
Often water for cooking, cleaning and drinking came from the local river or pond which was bad because the water was polluted by the rubbish.
Where did people get their water from because it was not plumped into homes?
People used a shared water a pump as a result of not having water in their houses
What could some families manage because there were no toilets?
The best some families could manage was a bucket in the corner.
How many people shared a deep whole to toilet?
Up to 30-40 families could share 1 ditch for a toilet.
What happened as a result of people being very poor and why did this make it not safe to go out at night?
Conmen, beggars and prostitutes pestered people constantly and pickpockets stole from any unsuspecting citizen this was the reason why it was not safe to go out at night in any large town as they had become a perfect place for thieves and robbers to operate.

What did overcrowded houses lead to?
Overcrowded buildings led to diseases spreading very quickly and epidemics of cholera were common.
What did these poor living conditions lead to?
The poor living conditions led to many people catching deadly diseases.

One in every 5 children died before their first birthday

Define Typhoid
The typhoid germ lived in urine and faeces. Sometimes sewage would contaminate water or food and pass on the germs. This disease could also be carried by flies which landed on food.
Define tuberculosis
This affected a person’s lungs and gave them a terrible cough. It was passed by people passing germs to others by coughing and sneezing
Define Cholera
This was caused by a germ that lives in contaminated water and killed 90% of people who caught it. There were many epidemics of cholera in the 1800s.
Define smallpox
A rash turns into huge pus-filled blisters all over the body. When the blisters fall off they leave deep scars. A vaccine was created for this in 1793 and by 1853 the government made it compulsory to receive the vaccination.
